If I Am Your Mirror – online short

Posted by Josh Samford On January - 31 - 2013

If I Am Your Mirror, an animated horror short.

As a continual friend of independent cinema, I thought I would pass along this quick little horror short for any potential viewers. Written and directed by Garrett DeHart for his graduate thesis, the short is quite accomplished. A mix of animation and live action, the short uses a similar style to the rotoscoping effect used by Richard Linklater in Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly. DeHart’s film is described as a story inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s The Tell Tale Heart as well as the painting style defined in the Romantic era. Starring Larry Holden (best known as Jimmy from Memento, but who also had parts in Insomnia and Batman Begins), the short certainly has more polish than the majority of indie shorts I run across. So, if you’re interested, you can visit the Youtube page and give this twenty minute short a go for yourself. Or you can simply click on the following link and watch the embedded video right here on Varied Celluloid.

Posted by Josh Samford On January - 30 - 2013

Dangerous Liaisons (2012)
Director: Hur Jin-ho
Writers: Yan Geling, based off the novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos
Starring: Jang Dong-Gun, Zhang Ziyi, Shawn Dou, and Cecilia Cheung

The Plot: Dangerous Liaisons is set in the aristocratic world of 1931, Shanghai. Xie Yifan (Jang Dong-gun) is a womanizing businessman who seemingly has very little concern for anyone other than himself. He has a strange relationship with fellow socialite Mo Jieyu (Cecillia Cheung). Jieuyu has always turned down Yifan’s advances and it seems as if this has made her a forbidden fruit in Yifan’s eyes. Although Yifan has eyes for Jieuyu, currently his latest conquest is the very shy Du Fenyu (Zhang Ziyi), a lovely young woman who has come into his life by way of his family. Jieyu senses an opportunity with this young girl and bets Yifan that he can’t seduce the young woman. If Yifan wins, Jieyu will sleep with him, but if Jieuyu wins then Yifan must give up a valuable piece of land. Will the lovely Fenyu give into Yifan’s charm, or will she continue to push him away?

Scream Factory Phantasm II special features finalized

Posted by Josh Samford On January - 30 - 2013

The Phantasm II release that we’ve always dreamed of!

If you have been a moderate fan of the Phantasm series, you know about it’s initial rarity during the big DVD boom of the early 2000s. It didn’t hit DVD until 2009 and then the disc was bare bones. There had been a great bit of hooplah made about the rights of the film being tied up and unfortunately it never made it into the hands of a company who truly appreciated the horror genre, until now! Shout! Factory, under their “Scream Factory” arm, will be releasing the DVD/Bluray on March 26th and they have recently made public the special features that will show up on the disc. If you guessed that this is going to be a stacked release, then you guessed right. Read on and enjoy.

PHANTASM II Collector’s Edition Bonus Content
– Audio Commentary with director/writer Don Coscarelli and actors Angus Scrimm and Reggie Banister
– “The Ball is Back!” Documentary – featuring new interviews with writer/director Don Coscarelli, actors Reggie Banister, Angus Scrimm, Paula Irvine, Samantha Phillips and more!

– Vintage Behind the Scenes footage: On the Set

– Original TV Spots
– Trailers for Phantasm , Phantasm II & Phantasm III
– Still Galleries (Behind the Scenes , Makeup Effects , Hollywood Premiere )
– Rare short film starring Rory Guy (aka Angus Scrimm) as Abraham Lincoln

I think I just had a horror nerd’gasm. March 26th can’t get here soon enough!

    Cloistered Nun: Runa’s Confession

Posted by Josh Samford On January - 18 - 2013

    Cloistered Nun: Runa’s Confessions (1976)
    Director: Masaru Konuma
    Writers: Toshiro Ashizawa
Starring: Runa Takamura, Kumi Taguchi, Roger Prince, and Aoi Nakajima

The Plot: Young Runa (Runa Takamura) is a nun who felt pushed into the monastery after her sister Kumi (Kumi Taguchi) stole her boyfriend. While Runa begins her new life as a nun, Kumi and the previously mentioned boyfriend immediately break off their relationship. For poor Runa, the life of peaceful worship that one expects of a nun turns out to be a nightmarish world of torture. The abbot at the monastery also happens to be a rather sadistic man who likes to get his jollies off with all of the fresh nuns, and poor Runa seems to be his main target. After being far away from home for a long period of time, Runa returns and approaches her sister with a large financial opportunity. However, this opportunity will only work for Kumi if she can team back up with Runa’s former lover. As the story begins to unfold, it becomes more apparent that Runa may be hiding a few tricks up her sleeve.
