The Plot: Hijiriko (Meiko Kaji) is hostess at a bar, Jiro (Tsunehiko Watase)nis a low-rent hood who is working with his buddies on their biggest score yet. In the same night, both of these outsiders run away from their jobs, but Jiro happens to take all of the prize money from this “big score” and now all of his old friends want him dead. So, with a laundry list of people searching for them, these two find a bond with one another and are soon enjoying their newfound riches. However, few great things are meant to last.

The Plot: Muraki (Keizo Kanie) is a playboy pornographer who finds himself living a rather monotonous life. One night, Muraki finds himself watching a pornographic film in a makeshift theater with several other gents. As sleazy as the situation may be, Muraki is shocked by what he sees onscreen. In a mock-rape scenario, he sees a beautiful young woman who immediately takes up permanent residence within his mind. Muraki is unable to forget this beautiful young girl and he sets out on a mission to track her down. He asks around about her but comes up with nothing. As he tries to continue on with his life, fate throws Muraki a curveball. The beautiful girl just so happens to work as an attendant at a love-motel where he has scheduled a photography session. When he meets the girl, Nami (Yuki Mizuhara), it turns out that she is far different than he expected. The mock-rape he had seen onscreen was not “mock” at all, Nami explains, but another of her rough encounters with the opposite sex. Nami is a confused young woman and Muraki wants to help her, but is there a happy ending waiting in line for these two?

The Plot: Angel Guts: High School Co-Ed follows around a trio of bikers led by a rough and tumble young man named Kawashima. The gang is notorious for their brutal ways, and on average their day consists of attempted murder, rape, and whatever other foul deeds they manage to come up with. However, things begin to go awry for the group whenever Kawashima begins to develop a conscience. Between his little sister Megu, who is beginning to enter into adulthood, and his developing feelings for the group’s latest victim, a girl named Nami, Kawashima is actually beginning to leave behind his sociopathic ways. However, his partners aren’t feeling the exact same way – and a brutal conflict is stirring on the streets. Can Kawashima simply drop his former lifestyle, or will he pay for all of his wrongdoings?

The Plot: Attack!! tells the story of a young female police officer named Kumiko (Asami Ogawa) who gets very little respect. Often harassed while on the job, she has numerous problems in her life. For one, she isn’t very open about her sexuality. She keeps everything bottled up and doesn’t let anyone else know that she accepts or enjoys sex. Second, she is afraid of confrontation. When men approach her in a sexual way, she becomes even more reserved than she normally is. As it turns out, both her fellow police officers and the criminals that she chases take advantage of this aspect of her personality. With all of these circumstances, Kumiko is about to have her life changed in the most unfortunate way possible. While driving in her police car, she has her vehicle rammed into a building by an unknown assailant. He demolishes the car by repeatedly slamming into it, but he isn’t done yet. He gets out of his car and proceeds to violate the young police officer. Having had her eyes and mouth covered with tape, Kumiko has no idea who assaulted her. She doesn’t report the crime to the authorities, but instead decides to take justice in her own hands. As she begins to search through the files of men who she has arrested previously, she finds that her attacker is a serial rapist and that he will be back again.

Assault! Jack the Ripper

The Plot: Assault! Jack the Ripper tells the story of a young baker who makes cakes at a small restaurant where the latest waitress is giving the management trouble. She has a severe attitude problem and a great deal of arrogance that puts her at odds with all customers. On a rainy night she asks the baker to give her a ride home and along the way a young hitchhiker invites herself into their car. When the hitchhiker strips nude, rubs herself down with cake and then finds a knife resting in the back seat, these two are reasonably frightened. With the knife, this hitchhiker begins slicing into her own arm and presents herself as a threat. They shove the hitchhiker out of the car and take off as fast as they can, but accidentally end up dragging the young woman who then dies. They drive to an abandoned car lot and hide the body, but when they return back to the waitresses home… they both discover they are turned on by the fear and violence. After this night of passion, the young waitress wants more and she prods the baker into pursuing more victims so that they can continue their torrid love affair. However, the baker soon begins to grow a passion for the violence alone.




The Review
For those who do not know the director by name, Yasuharu Hasebe is the filmmaker responsible for bringing us the Stray Cat Rock series in the Pinky Violence genre. Later on in his career, after working within the world of television, he was asked back by Nikkatsu studio who wanted to freshen up their Roman Porno (Romantic Porno, softcore features with an emphasis on artistic merit and sensuality) line of films and so they created the Violent Pink genre. Within this genre Hasebe made a loose series of four films that were based around the theme of rape and violence. I have seen the first entry into Yasuharu Hasebe’s rape quintet, known simply as Rape!, and although that wasn’t a very promising start it was still an interesting enough project that I held hope that Assault! Jack the Ripper could possibly be a more exciting effort.

The word around the campfire was that Assault! Jack the Ripper was considered the most violent of Hasebe’s Violent Pink films and possibly his most violent ever. That kind of cinematic transgression deserves at least one viewing! After having sat through the film however, If you’ve come expecting grisly violence then you may leave a bit disappointed. That isn’t to say Assault! isn’t a intensely violent movie or that it doesn’t have the power to disturb, because it does! This is a project that is far more concerned with the dynamics of human relationships than simply being about gore. So, gorehounds, leave your expectations at the door. There is a lot more to this project than simply the disturbing content. With Assault! Jack the Ripper I have found one of the most engaging entries into a Pinku subgenre that I have seen yet. Although this may not be the type of movie that outsiders might expect to be intellectually challenging, Assault! Jack the Ripper is rife with subtext and intense character study. It is also incredibly weird and equally as disturbed. So, there is a little bit for everyone with this one!

Made in 1976, Assault! Jack the Ripper couldn’t help but push some buttons with its graphic nature. A story about a man who stabs women in the crotch is going to turn some heads no matter what year you make it in, to be honest. What might intrigue Western viewers however is the artistic manner in which films like this were made. The erotic genres of Japanese cinema from this time period were often very rich and far from being formulaic. The filmmakers were given budgets and a certain amount of necessary nudity and they were ultimately left to their own devices and so a movie like Assault! Jack the Ripper was made. Hasebe is best known for his abundance of visual style and he lets himself go with this film as well. There are few large set-pieces throughout the movie, but even the most simplistic of sets are shot with an eye towards visual flare. Even the bedroom of our two leads, where we see these two share a considerable amount of time, is shot with a panache that brings out the vibrant colors that often dominate Hasebe’s work. The color red is often shown in a vibrant and dominating position and the contrast that Hasebe manages to give these colors helps really sell this imaginary world.

Although Hasebe takes the violence up a notch, knowing his position as a director for hire in many regards, I don’t doubt that this particular film was taken more as an instance of his feeling the need to experiment. There are a lot of really interesting ideas at play in Assault! Jack the Ripper that don’t really feel connected with one another by the strongest of means. Hasebe seems intrigued in the roles of violence and sexuality throughout the picture and does his best to examine the similarities and differences between these two concepts. Love and hate are shown as fleeting concepts that acts as fronts for our own selfish desires. The film opens with a cake being laboriously decorated by our leading man, as he dabs it with frosting and ensures the quality of his product down to the last detail. As he finishes his cake, his soon-to-be love interest steps in and slams a knife through the center of the cake ruining it. The violence of the knife piercing the cake is devastating after all of the love and time put into this project, for it to be demolished in seconds seems almost painful after witnessing the beauty of the work. The reason behind this destruction seems to be jealousy on the part of this female, as she disapproves of his attention being paid to this cake rather than to her. This introduces us to this constant theme of selfishness that runs throughout the movie.

The selfishness of sex itself is explored by this relationship that these characters discover. It is a relationship based entirely off of the eroticism of murder and the fear of being caught that comes with it, as well as the destruction of life. The taking of ones life for your own sexual satisfaction is the ultimate form of self-centered gratification. Although ideally sexual companionship should be about mutual gratification, we are ultimately individuals and we all care about our own sexual satisfaction first and foremost. The young woman of our story ultimately grows to have feelings for this young man, but does she really “love” him or does she simply want to control him? As we see, our male character is simply in on this relationship for his own sexual gratification and soon murder itself becomes his only sexual compulsion. These are loose ideas that are littered throughout the project, but they are most assuredly there. I haven’t even mentioned the fact that the women are repeatedly stabbed in the vagina! Using the knife as a phallic symbol, and what this possibly means in terms of symbolic imagery will be based entirely off of what the audience takes from the movie. It would be nice if these ideas were a little more focused, but the movie remains addictive in its watchability regardless. The strange atmosphere and the violent imagery make it a bizarre but fascinating watch for any viewer, but especially for those who love Japanese cinema.


The Trivia
  • When originally contacted by Nikkatsu about making these “violent pink” films, he warned the studio telling them “Are you sure you want me? You must be aware–my craft is very bloody.

  • In the same year Hasebe also made Rape! and Rape! 13th Hour

  • Actress Tamaki Katsura was asked specifically by director Hasebe to wear her hair in the afro-form that is seen in the movie. Despite her feeling that she may lose roles because of this, she did it regardless. This was her first starring role.


  • The Conclusion
    I have to say, I really liked Assault! Jack the Ripper. Although it is not a perfect film, it is entertaining in a very strange sort of way. It isn’t the sort of thing that all audiences are going to ultimately enjoy. There is a focus on death and violence towards women throughout and this shocking content is there for a reason. That reason could simply be to shock and disgust, there are certainly moments where even I get that feeling. As it is though, I think the goals this movie sets are achieved and it pushes the audience in a direction they may not be ready to travel. I give the movie a four out of five, which is a rating that I realize some may not agree with. I was thoroughly impressed with this picture though and I think there are others who will be equally as blown away. Check it out, if you have the stomach for it!
