The Horror Geek is Moving!

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

I started the Horror Geek site a few weeks back as an experiment–I wanted to see if I could make something I’d be happy with using WordPress, and I wanted to see if people would actually come to it and read what I was writing. My good friend Josh from VariedCelluloid was kind enough to set all of this up and give me space on his site to try it out.

Now, three weeks later, I’m pleased to announce that the site is moving to its own domain. From here forward, you can find all my rantings, ravings, reviews, and news at TheHorrorGeek.com. I hope you’ll all follow me over to the new URL–update your bookmarks, sign up for the new feed, and hang out with me at the new site. It’s exactly the same as this one, just with my old URL.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Two More Titles Join After Dark’s Horrorfest Line Up

Monday, October 6th, 2008

After Dark’s third annual 8 Films to Die For horror festival now only needs one more title to reach the 8 films part of their name. Two new films have been added to the Horrorfest slate, bringing the grand total to seven.

Adam Gierasch’s Autopsy and Dying Breed (starring Leigh Whannell of the original Saw) and Wolf Creek’s Nathan Phillips were announced today. They’ll be joining the five previously announced films (The Broken, From Within, Butterfly Effect: Revelation, Perkins’ 14, and Slaughter) from January 9th to 15 (which is a really odd time frame for a horror film fest). Expect DVD releases sometime after that.

I have to be honest-Horrorfest inspires a lot of conflicting emotions in me. On the one hand, I’m glad someone’s doing something once a year to promote the genre. On the other, I really wish they’d pick better films to shine the spotlight on. The first year of the festival was okay (with Nacho Cerda’s The Abandoned being the standout entry) but the second year suffered from a marked decline in quality overall. Is the third time the charm? Is this the year where they finally knock it out of the park? I hope so.

Check out the official 8 Films to Die For site for all kinds of info, including plot descriptions for all the films being featured in series.

Quick Site Update

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

First off, thanks to everyone who’s stopped by so far. Hopefully you’ve found something interesting enough to warrant return visits. I’ve got a lot of stuff planned for the upcoming weeks and months, including some interviews, articles (or maybe they’d be more accurately called rants–I’m a cranky dude), and the ever-present reviews.

At the moment, though, I’m in the middle of the Herculean task of moving several hundred old reviews over here. That’s a big enough job in and of itself, but when you add in the fact that they all have to be manually italicized and whatnot, it becomes even more daunting. Fear not, though–I’m on the case. If you check the Film Reviews section, you’ll see that roughly 65 reviews have already made the move to their new home here at The Horror Geek site, and the rest of my library will be here in the coming weeks. Between that and all the new stuff I have planned, you should be able to find enough reading material here to keep you occupied for several long bathroom trips–if not longer.

Oh yeah, one last thing. If you have something you want to see reviewed/discussed here leave a comment and let me know. I’d like for The Horror Geek site to be inclusive–a place where film geeks, trash cinema lovers, book fans, and gamers can read about the things they love and talk about them intelligently. It’s not all about me–it’s really about spreading the gospel when it comes to the things I love.

But enough rambling from me. Enjoy the site, check out the review archives, and expect more material (new and old) in the weeks ahead.
